Meta Reportedly Developing Camera-Free Smart Glasses Amid Privacy Concerns
Meta is reportedly developing a new pair of smart glasses without a camera. Codenamed “Luna,” the device is expected to focus on voice-powered artificial intelligence rather than taking photos or recording videos.
Silicon Valley-based news outlet *The Information* reported the development.
According to the report, Meta may officially unveil the new model at its annual Connect developer conference, scheduled for September 23 and 24. The glasses are expected to be available in two styles: Clubmaster and Burbank.
Although the model will not have a camera, it will reportedly include six built-in microphones and open-ear speakers directed towards the wearer’s ears. These features will allow users to communicate easily with Meta’s AI chatbot.
Removing the camera addresses the main feature that led some critics to describe Meta’s existing models as “pervert glasses” over privacy concerns.
The glasses are also expected to feature a dedicated side button for quickly activating Meta AI. Their slim frame and arms are designed to make them look more like ordinary glasses.
