The United States has announced a zero percent tariff on selected specialised medicines and related ingredients imported from 20 countries and regions, including Bangladesh and India.
The tariff exemption took effect on Tuesday (September 29). However, it does not apply to all types of medicine.
According to a list published by the US Department of Commerce in the Federal Register, the eligible countries and regions are Bangladesh, India, Argentina, Cambodia, Ecuador, El Salvador, the European Union, Guatemala, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, North Macedonia, South Korea, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.
The exemption covers medicines for rare diseases, nuclear medicine, plasma-based treatments, fertility drugs, cell and gene therapies, antibody-drug conjugates and certain veterinary medicines.
The active ingredients and essential raw materials used to produce these medicines will also receive the same benefit.
Eligible products from the listed countries and regions will receive the zero-tariff facility because they have existing or upcoming trade and security framework agreements with the United States.
