The International Day of Older Persons will be observed on October 1, as it is every year.
The United Nations General Assembly decided on December 14, 1990, that the day would be observed worldwide each year. Its main purpose is to protect older people, ensure their rights and raise global awareness about the challenges of ageing.
Bangladesh has observed the day since 1991, along with other countries around the world.
This year’s theme is: “The Age of Longevity: New Ideas in Management to Ensure Longer Lives.”
In a message issued on Wednesday (September 30), President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said remarkable progress in medical science and improvements in living standards have increased average life expectancy.
“As a result, the number of older people is steadily increasing in every country. This age of longevity gives us an opportunity to rethink healthcare, social security, housing and employment support for older citizens,” he said.
In a separate message, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the government is working to ensure financial security, healthcare and a dignified life for older citizens.
He said the government is expanding the old-age allowance programme, providing financial support through Family Cards, increasing access to primary healthcare and strengthening the social safety net.
