Family Alleges Medical Negligence in Child’s Death at Universal Medical College Hospital
The family of a four-and-a-half-year-old boy named Avan has alleged that he died at Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka, because of medical negligence, incorrect treatment, and an overdose of antibiotics.
The child died on Saturday while receiving treatment in the hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The hospital authorities did not immediately provide a clear explanation about the cause of death or respond to the family’s allegations.
Avan’s father, Md Mridul Islam, said his son was admitted to the hospital on September 28 with a mild fever and stomach pain. Doctors suspected dengue and began treatment, although repeated blood and dengue tests reportedly came back negative.
The family alleged that doctors continued treating him for dengue and administered high doses of antibiotics despite there being no clear signs of the disease.
According to relatives, Avan’s condition suddenly worsened on October 2. The doctor on duty said no pulse could be detected and that the child needed intensive care. The family wanted to transfer him to another specialised hospital but alleged that the hospital delayed the process.
They also claimed that the main doctor provided instructions by phone while less-experienced staff treated the child. Despite repeated assurances that his condition was improving, Avan died at around 5:00 pm on October 3.
The grieving family has demanded strict legal action against the doctors and hospital officials responsible for the alleged negligence.
