At least 11 climbers were killed when an avalanche struck their group in the Kabardino-Balkaria region of Russia’s North Caucasus. Six others were injured, while another six remain missing, according to local emergency authorities.
The avalanche swept down from Mount Mizhirgi, one of the highest peaks in the North Caucasus, at around 5 p.m. local time on Sunday. A group of 33 climbers was in the area at the time.
By 9 a.m. local time on Monday, 10 climbers had managed to descend the mountain on their own. However, six others remained unaccounted for, and their condition was still unknown.
Emergency crews have launched a search-and-rescue operation for the missing climbers, involving more than 50 rescuers. The operation is being hampered by the rugged mountainous terrain and the high risk of further avalanches.
