Bangladesh Imports 500 Tonnes of Hilsa from India
India has exported hilsa to Bangladesh for the first time, sending more than 500 tonnes over the past two months to meet growing demand for roe-bearing hilsa from Gujarat.
The information was reported by Indian news outlet India Today and news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).
A further 150 to 200 tonnes of roe-bearing hilsa are expected to be shipped to Bangladesh from Howrah’s wholesale fish market within the next week.
Bangladesh usually exports hilsa to India ahead of major festivals. This is the first time, however, that roe-bearing hilsa from Gujarat has been exported to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is the world’s leading producer of hilsa, accounting for an estimated 70 to 86 per cent of global production.
