The High Court has upheld Hitu Sheikh’s death sentence for the rape and murder of eight-year-old Asiya from Magura.
A bench comprising Justice Bishm Deb Chakrabortty and Justice K. M. Rasheduzzaman Raja delivered the ruling on Monday (August 31). The court reached its decision after hearing the defendant’s appeal and reviewing the trial court’s death sentence for confirmation.
According to the case records, Asiya visited her sister’s home in the Nijnanduali area of Magura town in early March 2025. There, she was raped and abused by her sister’s father-in-law, Hitu Sheikh. She died on March 13 while receiving treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
Asiya’s mother filed a case against Hitu Sheikh and three others over the incident. Police later arrested all four.
On May 17, 2025, Judge M. Zahid Hasan of Magura’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the trial court’s verdict. Hitu Sheikh was sentenced to death and fined Tk 100,000, while the other three defendants were acquitted.
