Bumper Aman Harvest Expected as Cultivation Exceeds Target in Dinajpur
Aman rice has been cultivated on 273,750 hectares of land in Dinajpur this season, exceeding the target by 1,480 hectares. Farmers are now expecting a bumper harvest.
Md Afzal Hossain, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Dinajpur, confirmed the information.
He said the cultivation target for this year was 272,270 hectares. However, favourable weather from the beginning of the season allowed farmers to cultivate an additional 1,480 hectares.
He added that a bumper harvest is expected if no natural disaster affects the crops.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, the cultivation targets for Dinajpur’s 13 upazilas were:
Dinajpur Sadar — 25,520 hectares; Biral — 24,700 hectares; Bochaganj — 17,800 hectares; Kaharole — 14,700 hectares; Birganj — 24,650 hectares; Khansama — 14,400 hectares; Chirirbandar — 24,900 hectares; Parbatipur — 22,750 hectares; Phulbari — 24,250 hectares; Birampur — 24,250 hectares; Nawabganj — 24,350 hectares; Hakimpur — 12,650 hectares; and Ghoraghat — 17,350 hectares.
Dinajpur is widely known as one of Bangladesh’s major food-producing districts. As the district has not experienced any major floods or natural disasters this season, officials are hopeful of a strong Aman harvest.
A bumper Boro harvest was also recorded earlier this year. If the Aman harvest meets expectations, the district will be able to supply a large amount of rice to other parts of the country after meeting local demand.
