The Ministry of Commerce has cancelled the licence of the Bangladesh Agrochemical Manufacturers Association (BAMA) and directed that it be merged with the Bangladesh Crop Protection Association (BCPA). The ministry has issued an official notification regarding the decision.
According to the notification, BAMA represents companies involved in importing raw materials and manufacturing pesticides. Most of its members belonged to BCPA before BAMA obtained its Trade Organisation licence, and many remain members of BCPA.
The Ministry of Commerce said BCPA has 1,230 members, while BAMA represents 20 business organisations.
The notification said the two organisations have similar objectives, functions, and areas of operation. The existence of multiple organisations in the same sector was creating obstacles to the import, production, distribution, and marketing of pesticides.
The government therefore concluded that the pesticide industry should be represented by a single trade organisation.
