THT Report • October 5, 2026
Three scientists have won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for helping explain how brain cells control human memory, emotions, and behaviour. The winners are Karl Deisseroth of the United States and Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel of Germany. Their names were announced in Stockholm, Sweden, at 3:30 pm Bangladesh time on Monday (October 5).
They received the award for important discoveries involving light-sensitive ion channels and optogenetics. The winners were selected by the Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet.
Karl Deisseroth, 54, is a researcher at Stanford University in the United States. Peter Hegemann, 71, works at Humboldt University of Berlin, while Georg Nagel, 73, is a researcher at the University of Würzburg in Germany.
Their method is now used in laboratories worldwide, helping scientists study the brain’s complex functions and better understand how it works.
