National Girl Child Day Observed Today

THT Report • September 30, 2026
Today, September 30, is National Girl Child Day in Bangladesh.
The day has been observed every year since 2000 under an initiative of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
Its main purpose is to end discrimination against girls and ensure their equal rights within the family, society and the state.
Although the United Nations has observed the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11 since 2012, Bangladesh separately observes National Girl Child Day on September 30.
The day aims to ensure girls’ access to education, proper nutrition, legal support and healthcare. It also raises awareness about gender discrimination, child marriage and violence against women and girls.
Despite the annual observance, many girls in Bangladesh still face neglect and discrimination. Some people continue to view daughters as a burden, while sons are often considered heirs, protectors of the family name and a source of support for parents in old age.
Although society considers itself modern, attitudes towards girls have not changed enough. Many girls still overcome neglect and difficult circumstances to build successful lives.
Girls deserve the same education, care and opportunities as boys. They must be treated as children and human beings with equal rights, not judged or limited because of their gender.
All forms of discrimination, neglect and abuse against girls must end. Families and society must recognise their potential and help them grow into educated, confident and capable individuals.
