Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam submitted his bail bond to a court on Sunday after securing High Court bail in an attempted murder case filed with Pallabi Police Station. Hours later, his second wife, 19-year-old Mariam Khatun, was found dead in their flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.Police recovered Mariam’s body on Sunday evening (September 20) from Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5.
A police officer at the scene said Gazi Nazrul Islam had lunch with his two wives on Sunday. They went to separate rooms at around 3:30 pm.
When the MP went to call Mariam after 5 pm, he found her door locked. Looking through a window, he reportedly saw her hanging from the ceiling fan and informed police.
Officers from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station arrived at the scene. Teams from the Police Bureau of Investigation and the Criminal Investigation Department later collected evidence. The locked door was then opened, and the body was brought down.
Earlier that day, Gazi Nazrul Islam submitted his bail bond in connection with an attempted murder case filed against him and several others.
His personal driver, Obaidur Rahman, filed the case on July 21, alleging that he had been beaten and nearly strangled after protesting an alleged extramarital relationship and being suspected of leaking a purported video.
The High Court granted the MP eight weeks’ bail in the case on August 10.
Police have taken Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife into custody for questioning over Mariam’s death.
