22-Day Hilsa Fishing Ban to Begin on October 8

THT Report • September 15, 2026
The government has announced a 22-day nationwide ban on hilsa fishing to protect breeding fish and ensure safe spawning.
The decision was made on Tuesday (September 15) at a meeting of the National Task Force Committee on Hilsa Resource Development at the Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Amin Ur Rashid, minister for fisheries and livestock as well as agriculture.
Under the decision, hilsa fishing will remain prohibited across the country from October 8 to 29.
During this period, the transportation, storage, marketing, purchase, sale and exchange of hilsa will also be banned. A nationwide campaign will be conducted to protect breeding hilsa.
The government will provide Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) assistance to fishers who refrain from catching hilsa during the ban.
